Washington (Monitoring Desk) — A special drone light show was held in New York to mark the 25th anniversary of those killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, illuminating the sky over New York Harbor with 2,977 drones.
The number of drones was set at 2,977 because the same number of people were killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
The show, titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” has also gone viral on social media through photos and videos.
Viral videos show thousands of illuminated drones appearing high above New York Harbor at night and gradually moving closer together to form what appeared to be an outline of the World Trade Center.
According to the show’s director and executive producer, Addison Mehr, the unique tribute was intended to highlight the personal loss and memories of each individual who died in the September 11 tragedy. That is why 2,977 drones, matching the number of victims, were used.
Family members of those killed in the tragedy, survivors and emergency responders also played a role in preparing the drone light show.
