Mumbai (Showbiz Desk): Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s niece, Zeenat Mari, has shared a video on social media showing marks of injuries on her body after being taken into police custody during a protest in Mumbai.
In a video posted on Instagram, Zeenat showed marks on her arms, fingers, and legs. Alongside the video, she wrote that she exposes state actions on the internet and urged authorities not to frighten her to the point where she no longer feels fear.
The actress took part in a protest held on Saturday at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan. Demonstrators demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for the restoration of voting rights amid allegations that names had been improperly removed from electoral rolls.
Zeenat had earlier shared videos showing herself being detained alongside actors Imran Khan and Lekha Washington. Police took the three actors away in a vehicle. After being released a few hours later, they described their experiences on social media.
In his video, Imran Khan claimed that he was not told why he had been detained. According to him, police officers picked him and other people up from the street, put them in a vehicle, drove them around different locations for approximately two hours, and then dropped them at an undisclosed location.
According to the report, Mumbai Police detained more than 400 people, including Imran Khan, during protests at August Kranti Maidan and the nearby Nana Chowk area. The demonstration was organised following a call by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Protesters demanded the chief election commissioner’s resignation over concerns about electoral roll revisions and alleged manipulation of voter names.
Tushar Gandhi was also detained while travelling towards the protest site but was subsequently released.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party had announced a separate protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against changes to electoral rolls and voter registration procedures. According to the report, the movement’s founder, Abhijit Dipke, and his associates were detained upon arriving in New Delhi. Large numbers of other people, including opposition leaders, journalists, and lawyers, were also taken into police custody.
