KABUL (Monitoring Desk): Concerns regarding the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and regional security have increased following the Taliban’s return to power.
Indian think tank Observer Research Foundation has expressed concern over Afghanistan’s situation under the Taliban government, stating that the country is facing serious humanitarian and security challenges.
According to the report, in March 2026, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Afghanistan as a country allegedly supporting unlawful detentions.
According to the think tank, in December 2025, Australia imposed travel and financial sanctions on three Taliban ministers and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It added that the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has intensified since the Taliban took control.
The report stated that the Taliban government has imposed restrictions on women’s education, while supporters of the former government and minority communities are also facing attacks and difficulties. It further said that Afghanistan’s budget sources and spending system have been described as lacking transparency.
According to the think tank, there are also concerns that some financial resources of the country may be spent on purchasing weapons instead of being directed toward other sectors. The presence of Al-Qaeda and other militant groups has also been described as a security threat to the region.
Former U.S. diplomat and Afghanistan affairs expert Yni Forzheimer said that the situation regarding human rights, particularly concerning women, minorities, and the media, along with the alleged sheltering of terrorist groups, remains a major concern.
