New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): The “Cockroach Janta Party” movement, which started on social media against examination irregularities in India, is gaining momentum, causing concern in government circles.
According to reports, the protest intensified after human rights activist Sonam Wangchuk was forcibly shifted to a hospital during his hunger strike. The party’s founder, Abhijit Dipke, also began a hunger strike in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk; however, an incident of ink being thrown at him also occurred during the protest.
Sonam Wangchuk’s wife told journalists that she was not being provided with his medical reports and that she did not trust the government and the state hospital regarding his treatment.
According to Indian media, opposition parties, which had differences over the forced hospitalization of Sonam Wangchuk, have also united and are criticizing the government.
British analyst Hannah Ellis Petersen said that although the Cockroach Janta Party initially started as an online joke, it is now becoming a political challenge for India’s ruling party. According to her, the growing activities of the movement and the united response from the opposition indicate an increasing trend of political resistance in the country.
