Islamabad (Pakistan Desk) On the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's strong commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the Constitution, supporting the parliamentary system of government and ensuring the rule of law.
In his message, the Prime Minister stated that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the democratic system and democratic values, while under the spirit of the Constitution, the people are the true source of power and elected representatives use that authority as a trust for public service and welfare.
He said that Parliament is a constitutional forum where legislation is carried out through public representation on national issues, while Pakistan's parliamentary democracy has also made notable progress in ensuring the inclusion of different groups and communities.
According to the Prime Minister, effective representation of women, minorities, smaller provinces and other underprivileged groups has been ensured, while reserved seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan and the Senate of Pakistan reflect this constitutional vision. He added that the Senate further strengthens the federal system by providing equal representation to the federating units.
Shehbaz Sharif stated that transparency, public access to information and modern parliamentary traditions are fundamental requirements of a democratic system, and that Pakistan's Parliament has made significant progress by making legislation, parliamentary debates and committee reports available to the public.
He further said that Pakistan's Parliament is also playing an active role in international parliamentary diplomacy and is contributing through various global forums towards promoting world peace, dialogue, sustainable development, human rights, gender equality and international cooperation.
