Lisbon (Sports Desk) — Portugal’s renowned footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a possible ban after leaving the national team’s training camp in anger. The Portuguese Football Federation has initiated disciplinary proceedings against him under its regulations.
According to reports, Ronaldo left the national team’s camp following disagreements with coach Jorge Jesus over playing time. He could face a ban ranging from one to six months in the case, although the final decision will be made by the disciplinary council.
If the ban lasts longer than one month, Ronaldo will be unable to play in next month’s Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. However, according to a report by the American broadcaster ESPN, a shorter suspension is considered more likely.
In a statement, Ronaldo apologised to his national team teammates and the Portuguese public, acknowledging that leaving the training camp was a mistake.
He said that the coach’s failure to honour a promise had disappointed him. However, he acknowledged that there should be consequences for his actions and that the rules should apply equally to everyone.
Coach Jorge Jesus said he had read Ronaldo’s statement and was now focusing on matters concerning the team.
Cristiano Ronaldo has played 234 matches for Portugal so far, scoring a record 146 goals.
