FBR Imposes Rs5 Per Unit Sales Tax on Electricity Used by Steel Units

Islamabad (Commerce Desk): The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has imposed a sales tax of Rs5 per unit on electricity consumed by additional steel manufacturers, melters, re-rollers and composite units.

The FBR amended Sales Tax General Order No. 16 of 2026, adding three new businesses to the list: KB Enterprises, GMB Steel Furnace and Rajput Steel Industry.

The additions were made through an amendment to the general order dated August 6, 2026.

According to the FBR, the eligibility of these businesses was determined under the criteria specified in SRO 1245(1)/2026, dated July 31, 2026. The criteria take into account scrap and electricity consumption used in steel production, as well as scrap imports under specified HS codes.

The FBR clarified that the list of taxpayers may be revised from time to time. Based on recommendations from the board or the relevant commissioner of Inland Revenue, the eligibility of any registered manufacturer may be reassessed, and the manufacturer may be added to or removed from the list.
