Five Ways to Protect Yourself From AI Hackers

Five Ways to Protect Yourself From AI Hackers

California (Web Desk): While artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming everyday life and the technology sector, its misuse is also increasing cybersecurity risks. Hackers can use AI tools to guess passwords, create fake messages and attempt to deceive people.

By adopting a few basic security measures, users can better protect their personal information and online accounts against cyberattacks.

1. Use Strong and Unique Passwords

AI tools can help attackers guess short and commonly used passwords. To reduce this risk, use strong, unique passwords containing at least 16 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.

Use a different password for every website and account. Instead of trying to remember all your passwords, using a reliable password manager is also an effective approach.

2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication

Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on email, banking and social media accounts. This method requires an additional verification step beyond a password when logging in, making it harder for attackers to access an account using a stolen password.

Where possible, use an authentication app or a security key instead of a regular text message for verification.

3. Keep Software and Devices Updated

Cyberattackers can exploit software vulnerabilities. Therefore, regularly update the operating systems on computers and mobile devices, apps, web browsers and home internet routers.

Keeping automatic updates enabled helps ensure that new updates addressing security vulnerabilities are installed promptly, reducing the risk of cyberattacks.

4. Verify Suspicious Messages and Calls

Fake emails generated with AI, deepfake videos and calls that imitate someone’s voice can be difficult to recognize. Hackers may use these techniques to persuade users to disclose personal information or transfer money.

If a message threatens to close an account immediately or a relative suddenly asks for money, avoid acting in haste. Contact the person or organization directly using a previously known and trusted phone number to verify the request.

5. Avoid Sharing Sensitive Information With AI Tools

Avoid entering confidential personal information, identification numbers, financial details or private company files directly into public AI chatbots.

Before providing information to any AI service, review its privacy policy and terms regarding data usage, as some services may store or process information submitted by users.

Precautions Are Essential for Online Safety

Although complete protection against AI-related cyber threats cannot be guaranteed, measures such as using strong passwords, enabling additional verification, updating software, checking suspicious communications and safeguarding sensitive information can play an important role in protecting online accounts and personal data.
