According to Google, during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Argentina and Egypt, users around the world searched for information in large numbers at the same time, causing an extraordinary increase in search traffic.
Under normal circumstances, more than 99,000 searches are made on Google every second, while billions of searches are completed daily. However, according to the company, the decisive moments of this match broke all previous records.
According to Nick Fox, Google's Head of Knowledge and Information, search traffic witnessed a sudden and unusual surge immediately after Argentina's decisive goal on July 7, reaching the highest level recorded in the past 28 years.
Although Google did not release the exact number of searches per second, a company spokesperson said that after the decisive moment, search pressure reached an all-time high. According to him, it felt as if users around the world wanted to get information about the same topic at the same time.
Experts say that major global sporting events, especially the FIFA World Cup, become the center of attention for internet users worldwide, resulting in a significant increase in traffic on search engines, social media websites, and online broadcasting platforms.
