Heavy Fine Imposed on Website for Violation of Online Safety Laws in the United Kingdom

London (Monitoring Desk) — The UK media regulator Ofcom has imposed a fine of 950,000 pounds on a website over serious allegations related to content promoting suicide.

According to the report, the said platform has been linked to at least 50 deaths and was subsequently found guilty of violating the Online Safety Act.

According to Ofcom, the relevant website did make some attempts to block users in the United Kingdom, however these measures were insufficient and inconsistent, due to which access to harmful content remained available.

The authority stated that the purpose of this law is to protect users in the UK from illegal and harmful online content.

The Molly Rose Foundation, an organization campaigning for online safety, criticized the delay in this action, saying that during this period affected families and social institutions had to continuously apply pressure.

According to the organization, vulnerable individuals remained at greater risk during the investigation, and more deaths were also reported during this time.
