After the water level in Nullah Lai reached 29 feet, it is now rapidly receding. At Kattarian, the water level is 9 feet, while in Gawalmandi it has fallen to 13.5 feet from the highest level of 23.5 feet. Water is also rapidly receding from low-lying areas.
Earlier, sirens were sounded after the water level in Nullah Lai rose to a dangerously high level, and residents of low-lying areas along its banks were directed to immediately move to safer locations.
According to the administration, a major flood surge coming from Islamabad was moving toward Rawalpindi, prompting orders for the evacuation of residents in low-lying areas.
At Kattarian, the water level in Nullah Lai initially reached 14.5 feet and crossed the pre-alert level, after which it continued rising and reached 18.5 feet. In Gawalmandi, the water level had also risen from 7 feet to 11 feet.
Floodwater from Nullah Lai entered the Soan River, where a high-level flood was recorded. Flooding also occurred on GT Road, in private residential societies, Adiala Road, Chontra, Chakri and Chak Beli.
During heavy rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, 120 millimeters of rain was recorded in New Kattarian, 119 millimeters in Golra and 104 millimeters in Shamsabad, compared with 101, 90 and 75 millimeters respectively recorded earlier.
An emergency rain warning has also been issued due to heavy rainfall in the upper areas of Nullah Lai. The administration has alerted all relevant institutions, warning that further rainfall could cause the water level to rise rapidly again and create a risk of another flood surge.
