Islamabad (Web Desk) — Pakistani Member of the National Assembly Dr. Sharmila Faruqui attended the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Arusha, Tanzania, where she presented Pakistan’s position on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the military sector.
Addressing a meeting of the Standing Committee on International Peace and Security, Sharmila Faruqui said Pakistan had consistently emphasized that meaningful human decision-making and human control must be maintained in the use of military AI.
She said global regulations should be developed for military artificial intelligence, along with confidence-building and risk-reduction measures, while legally binding international rules should be established regarding fully autonomous weapons.
According to Sharmila Faruqui, Pakistan has been actively advancing this position through the United Nations and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, including proposals for an international legally binding agreement on lethal autonomous weapons systems.
She said Pakistan had also hosted regional consultative meetings in Islamabad on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the military sector.
The MNA said accountability cannot be delegated to an algorithm and that meaningful human decision-making must remain central to decisions involving the use of force.
She said the rapid performance of military AI could reduce the time available for decision-making, increasing the risks of miscalculation and unintended escalation, particularly in a nuclear region such as South Asia.
Sharmila Faruqui said global rules on military AI should be developed through a comprehensive multilateral process based at the United Nations, with developing countries also given an equal voice in the process.
She said artificial intelligence could accelerate warfare, but it is the responsibility of the international community to ensure that it does not accelerate the process of pushing the world toward conflict.
