Iran elected Vice President of NPT Review Conference, U.S. raises objection

New York (Monitoring Desk) — Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference 2026 has elected Iran as its Vice President, a decision that has drawn strong objections from the United States.

During the conference, a heated exchange also took place between Iranian Ambassador Reza Najafi and U.S. representative Christopher Robert.

The American representative termed the decision inappropriate, stating that serious concerns exist regarding Iran’s nuclear program and that a country allegedly violating non-proliferation principles should not be given leadership roles in such an important forum.

On the other hand, Iran described the election as a diplomatic success and said it reflects the confidence of member states. According to Ambassador Reza Najafi, Iran will continue to defend its rights under international agreements.
