Japan: High School Student Arrested Over Alleged Cyberattack Using ChatGPT

Japan (Web Desk) — A 15-year-old high school student in Japan has been arrested for allegedly developing software with the help of the AI tool ChatGPT and using it to carry out a cyberattack.

According to foreign media reports, the suspect is accused of creating a program that was used to attack Bandai Namco Filmworks' streaming service, Bandai Channel. The incident reportedly disrupted the platform's operations and resulted in the deletion of more than 46,000 user accounts.

Police said the incident occurred in November 2025, and the teenager is suspected of fraudulently interfering with business operations.

Investigators said the suspect allegedly exploited a vulnerability in the platform's security system, forcing the company to temporarily suspend parts of its service.

During questioning, the student said he had been using computers since the fourth grade and had written the core source code used in the attack himself. He added that because the processing took a long time, he sought assistance from ChatGPT, which helped him complete the code in different programming languages.

According to police, the suspect admitted that he had no personal grudge against the company. He said he targeted the platform simply because it contained a large number of user accounts that he believed could be accessed.
