Kenge (Monitoring Desk) — A military aircraft crashed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 14 people, including two senior military officers.
According to the Congolese army, the aircraft was traveling from Kikwit to the capital Kinshasa when it developed a technical fault en route.
The pilot attempted an emergency landing in Kenge; however, due to the lack of a suitable runway, the aircraft crashed into a residential area and was destroyed.
According to the army, those killed included the head of the military court and the Auditor General of the Armed Forces, along with other military personnel, members of a delegation and the aircraft crew.
Most of the bodies were badly burned after the crash, making identification difficult.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, but the exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Local reports had earlier put the death toll at 13 or more, but the army confirmed 14 deaths in its latest statement.
