New Efficient and Low-Pollution Method Developed for Lithium Extraction, Major Breakthrough in Energy Sector

New York (Web Desk): Researchers from Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have completed a study on a new and advanced method for extracting lithium, which has the potential to make the process faster, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly.

According to the research, global demand for lithium continues to rise due to electric vehicles and renewable energy projects. However, traditional lithium production methods are considered slow, expensive, and harmful to the environment.

The new technology, called “Switchable Solvent Selective Extraction,” is a solvent-based system that responds to temperature changes and directly extracts lithium from underground brine solutions.

Researchers stated that the method proved effective even when lithium concentrations were very low or mixed with other minerals that are difficult to separate using conventional techniques.

The research team reported that in experiments, the system extracted lithium 10 times faster than sodium and 12 times faster than potassium.

It was further noted that the method can also effectively separate challenging elements such as magnesium, potentially leading to significant improvements in lithium extraction processes.

Experts say that if this technology is successfully scaled to industrial levels, it could significantly reduce the cost of electric vehicles and energy storage systems, thereby further promoting clean energy initiatives.
