California (Web Desk): Researchers have developed an innovative technology that can identify different scents using an electronic nose and reproduce them at another location.
The technology, called Scentronic, first uses an electronic nose to identify a specific scent and then sends a signal to a remote wearable device. The device releases aromatic molecules to recreate a fragrance similar to the original scent.
Chun-Yu Yang, a doctoral student in materials science and engineering at Ohio State University and the lead author of the research, said the technology combines the ability to detect a scent in one location with the ability to reproduce a similar fragrance somewhere else.
Yang said the aim of the technology is to make it possible to share scents over the internet, just as images and sounds are shared, making digital experiences more realistic, engaging, and immersive for people in different locations.
The technology could pave the way for incorporating the sensation of smell into online communication and digital experiences in the future.
