Nick Maddinson’s Test Comeback Ends in 33-Ball Duck Against South Africa

Lahore (Sports Desk) — Australian opener Nick Maddinson was dismissed for a duck after facing 33 balls in the Durban Test against South Africa, setting an unwanted record.

In the first match of the Test series, which began on Friday, South African fast bowler Marco Jansen bowled Maddinson.

According to cricket reports, based on available records, Maddinson became the Australian opener to face the most balls before being dismissed for a duck in Test cricket. His innings has also been described as the longest duck by a Test opener in the 21st century.

The 34-year-old Maddinson returned to Test cricket after almost 10 years. He last played a Test match against Pakistan in December 2016, having made his Test debut against South Africa earlier that year.

Maddinson’s return to Test cricket was particularly significant because he was diagnosed with cancer in 2025 and had to undergo chemotherapy.

After recovering, he worked hard to earn his place in the national team again and was included in Australia’s squad for the tour of South Africa. However, his Test comeback proved disappointing.
