Paraguay produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets by defeating Germany in a penalty shootout during a thrilling knockout-stage encounter. The South American side had reached the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams but succeeded in eliminating the globally respected German team from the tournament.
This marked the first occasion in World Cup history that Germany suffered defeat in a penalty shootout.
