Parcel Scam Used to Hack WhatsApp Accounts

Karachi (Web Desk): A new cyber fraud method has emerged in which citizens’ WhatsApp accounts are hacked and their relatives and friends are deceived into sending money.

Fraudsters pretend to be representatives of well-known courier companies and call citizens, asking for the WhatsApp verification code received on their mobile phones under the pretext of parcel delivery or address verification.

As soon as a citizen shares the code with the caller, the fraudsters register WhatsApp on the same number on their own mobile phone and gain control of the account.

After taking control of the account, the scammers send messages to the victim’s WhatsApp contacts, pretending to be in trouble, and ask relatives, friends or colleagues for money as urgent financial assistance.

Citizens should remember: Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone, even if the person claims to be a representative of a courier company or any other organization.
