Islamabad (Commerce Desk): The current government has completed two and a half years, during which citizens had to bear the burden of expensive petrol and diesel along with heavy petroleum levy.
According to media reports, during the tenure of the current government, a record Rs. 3,137 billion was collected from citizens in the form of petroleum levy, while during this period, the price of diesel increased by Rs. 233 and the price of petrol increased by up to Rs. 178.66.
According to official documents, the current federal government collected Rs. 3,137 billion in petroleum levy during the two-and-a-half-year period. The burden of this amount had to be borne by citizens through the prices of petroleum products.
According to the documents, at the start of the government on March 4, 2024, the price of one litre of diesel was Rs. 287.33, which increased to Rs. 520.35. Similarly, the per-litre price of petrol increased from Rs. 279.75 to Rs. 458.41, reaching an unprecedented level for the first time in the country's history.
During the tenure of the current government, the per-litre price of diesel recorded an increase of Rs. 233, while the price of petrol increased by up to Rs. 178.66.
According to official data, during fiscal year 2025-26, the federal government collected Rs. 1,567 billion in petroleum levy. In addition, more than Rs. 50 billion was separately collected as carbon levy on petrol and diesel.
During fiscal year 2024-25, Rs. 1,220 billion was collected in petroleum levy, while levy collection during the April to June 2024 quarter stood at Rs. 299.63 billion.
At present, a petroleum levy of Rs. 80 per litre is imposed on both petrol and diesel, while Rs. 5 per litre is also being separately collected on both products under environmental support.
