Lahore (Pakistan Khabar) — Under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a decision has been made to launch electric bus services at the tehsil level across the province, with the service scheduled to begin in January 2027.
Under the project, a total of 1,500 electric buses will operate in 91 tehsils of Punjab, while approval has also been granted to establish a separate electric bus depot for each tehsil. The first batch of buses for the tehsil-level service will arrive in Lahore in January 2027.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has also approved additional electric buses for various districts. A target has been set to have 3,000 electric buses operating across the province by June 2027, while completion of the first phase of the service has been targeted for September.
According to the plan, 169 electric buses will operate in nine tehsils of Multan, 87 in four tehsils of Sahiwal, 215 in 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur, 63 in 10 tehsils of Dera Ghazi Khan, 202 in 12 tehsils of Faisalabad, and 198 in 14 tehsils of Sargodha.
Similarly, 125 electric buses have been allocated for seven tehsils of Gujranwala, 122 for eight tehsils of Gujrat, and 219 for 16 tehsils of Rawalpindi.
A total of 612 electric buses are already fully operational in various districts of Punjab, providing transport facilities to millions of citizens every day. Another 192 buses in Multan and other districts will become part of the service within the next few days.
Additional electric buses will be provided to various districts, including Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Attock. Additional bus services will also be launched in Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura.
It has also been decided to provide more electric buses to Mandi Bahauddin, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Gujranwala and Multan.
Meanwhile, work on the Faisalabad and Gujranwala mass transit systems is progressing rapidly, while the project for the construction and rehabilitation of 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus Service is also nearing completion.
