Washington (Monitoring Desk) — US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has announced her support for a bill seeking to block approximately $3.3 billion in US military aid to Israel. The vote on the bill is expected in the House of Representatives this week.
In a statement on social media platform X, the Palestinian-American lawmaker said that the United States should not continue funding a military institution accused of genocide in Palestine, forced displacement in Lebanon, and alleged war crimes in Iran.
She added that a large majority of the American public, especially Democratic voters, support ending military aid to Israel, and therefore public opinion should be reflected in legislation.
According to reports, several other prominent Democratic lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Greg Casar, and Ilhan Omar, have also expressed support for the bill.
The legislation was introduced by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who is known for opposing US military interventions abroad and has also opposed a potential war against Iran.
Further reports suggest that Massie previously faced a Trump-backed challenger in a Republican primary and was not successful in retaining his seat in that contest.
