Rs1.99 Per Unit Electricity Relief May End, Raising Price Hike Concerns

Islamabad (Commerce Desk) — The Rs1.99 per unit quarterly adjustment relief being provided to electricity consumers across the country, including Karachi, is set to expire this month, raising concerns that electricity prices may increase next month.

According to sources, electricity consumers are currently receiving relief of more than Rs67.17 billion under the quarterly adjustment for January to March 2026. However, the three-month period of this relief, which took effect in June 2026, will end in August.

Sources said the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 is likely to be implemented from next month.

Electricity distribution companies have filed an application with NEPRA for the new quarterly adjustment, seeking to pass an additional burden of more than Rs23 billion on to consumers. The proposed increase amounts to approximately Rs1 per unit, although NEPRA will make the final decision on the increase.
