Sheikh Hasina announces plan to return to Bangladesh this year

New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): Fugitive former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she will return to her country this year, despite being sentenced to death in absentia a few months earlier on charges of crimes against humanity. New Delhi Bangladesh

The 78-year-old Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024 after a student-led movement ended her 15-year-long strict rule. India

In an interview with an Indian broadcaster, she said she is not afraid of death and described the verdict against her as illegal, unconstitutional, and political in nature.

She stated that many conspiracies were made against her, but she repeatedly exposed them, was elected Prime Minister five times by public vote, and worked for the country’s development.

She further added that despite all obstacles and conspiracies, she will return to Bangladesh this year.

In November last year, a court in Dhaka sentenced her to death after finding her guilty of incitement, ordering killings, and failing to prevent atrocities. Dhaka

Her party, the Awami League, has also been banned, and was previously one of the largest political parties in the country.

Following elections held in February, political conditions in Bangladesh changed, and signs of improvement in relations between India and Bangladesh also emerged.

However, tensions between Bangladesh and India remain, as Dhaka continues to demand her extradition from India.
