New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): The youth protest movement against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has intensified, with students, parents, and social activists taking to the streets demanding reforms in the education system.
According to reports, Indian police used tear gas and baton charges to stop the students’ march toward Parliament; however, the protesters remained firm in support of their demands.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, students, parents, political activists, and social workers, led by the youth movement, marched toward the Indian Parliament for educational reforms. The protest began after social activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk was allegedly forcibly shifted to a hospital.
The protesters say that despite their peaceful demonstration, police action has led the movement to add the demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with the Education Minister.
Movement founder Abhijit Deepke alleged that the action against Sonam Wangchuk was condemnable, and protests against government policies are now expanding further.
According to reports, alleged paper leaks in medical entrance examinations, affecting millions of students, and the suicides of several students have created severe unrest among the younger generation.
Analysts say that problems in India’s education system, examination irregularities, and difficulties faced by students have created new political challenges for the government.
