New York (Web Desk): A new scientific study suggests that if a dangerous asteroid were on a collision course with Earth and there was very little time to respond, placing a nuclear device inside the asteroid and detonating it could be an effective strategy.
According to the study, there is currently no known asteroid that poses an immediate threat to Earth. However, scientists say a new space rock could be discovered at any time, leaving humanity with only a few days to respond.
Researchers said several planetary defense methods are being explored to protect Earth from potential asteroid impacts, including deflecting or destroying the object.
Experts noted that if the warning time is extremely short, conventional approaches—such as crashing a spacecraft into the asteroid to alter its trajectory—may not be effective.
The study proposes that in such an emergency, detonating a nuclear device inside the asteroid could offer a more effective way to prevent a catastrophic impact. However, the researchers emphasized that further studies and testing are needed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the concept.
