Washington (Monitoring Desk): According to US and British media reports, Syria is considering various possibilities for military cooperation in Yemen at the request of Saudi Arabia.
According to the reports, the proposals under consideration include defense cooperation with Saudi Arabia as well as the possible deployment of Syrian personnel to support Yemeni forces fighting against the Houthis.
According to a US official, Saudi Arabia has requested Damascus to cooperate in the war against the Houthis. However, a Syrian diplomat said that Syria is currently focused on its domestic priorities, recovery and reconstruction.
According to the Syrian diplomat, if Saudi Arabia requests military cooperation or an exchange of expertise, the matter will be considered under the official and bilateral agreements existing between the two countries.
Analysts have warned that Syria’s possible involvement could further complicate the sectarian and regional dimensions of the Yemen conflict, while a direct confrontation between Syrian forces and the Houthis could also trigger a sensitive regional reaction.
According to the report, Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa recently met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh. According to three US officials, Ahmed al-Sharaa is seriously considering the Saudi request and may accept it.
