London (Monitoring Desk): Britain’s domestic intelligence agency MI5 has accused a research institute linked to China of using research conducted at British universities to help improve the technical capabilities of Chinese intelligence.
In an unusual public warning, MI5 instructed British academic institutions to immediately review their existing and future research cooperation with the China General Technology Research Institute. According to the agency, the Chinese organization has strong links with China’s Ministry of State Security.
According to the British intelligence agency, more than 100 UK-affiliated academics have participated in research projects funded through the institute. These projects include research related to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other sensitive technologies. Some researchers may not have been aware of the original source of the funding.
MI5 warned that universities, researchers, and other individuals who continue such research links with the institute could face legal risks under UK national security laws. The agency also advised academic institutions to examine the original sources of Chinese funding received for research.
British Security Minister Dan Jarvis also instructed university leaders to take action regarding ties with the Chinese institute. Dan Jarvis has served as security minister since July 21, 2026.
Meanwhile, China has rejected the British allegations of espionage. Beijing maintains that educational and research cooperation between China and Britain is conducted normally and by mutual consent.
The development comes as Britain continues economic and diplomatic cooperation with China while also addressing concerns related to national security.
