Washington (Monitoring Desk): U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that if Iran changes its conduct, the path of diplomacy remains open, and the United States does not want to completely close the door on negotiations with Tehran.
Marco Rubio said that instead of keeping the Strait of Hormuz safe and open, Iran targeted three commercial vessels, which he described as actions contrary to efforts for reconciliation.
The U.S. Secretary of State alleged that Iran is still targeting commercial ships through missile and drone attacks, in response to which the United States is taking measures.
He claimed that Iran is signaling interest in negotiations through various channels; however, differences over policy issues exist due to the country’s internal economic crisis. According to him, one group in Iran supports negotiations, while another wants to maintain a hardline position.
Marco Rubio said that if pro-negotiation elements in Iran succeed in decision-making, it would be a positive development. However, he added that under the current circumstances, the United States will continue its operations.
He said the United States will continue taking steps to protect international waterways and commercial vessels, but the burden of this responsibility should not fall on the U.S. alone.
The U.S. Secretary of State urged other countries to share responsibility for protecting global maritime trade and contribute through naval resources, defense equipment, or financial support.
