YouTube Tests AI Summaries in Desktop Search Results

California (Web Desk): YouTube is testing an expansion of its conversational “Ask YouTube” feature in desktop search results, allowing users to access AI-generated summaries and detailed information before clicking on a video.

The move continues Google’s efforts to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its video platform. YouTube previously introduced the “Ask YouTube” feature for mobile users.

According to YouTube’s announcement, the feature is currently being tested on a limited basis in the United States. At this stage, it is available only to selected users who are signed in to their accounts on desktop computers and search in English.

Instead of displaying only a conventional list of videos, YouTube may present a detailed AI-generated overview at the top of the search results page in response to certain queries.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for questions that require explanations, guidance, or instructions for learning a skill. For example, if a user searches for how to remove stains from painted walls, YouTube may provide written guidance alongside relevant videos.

According to the report, AI-generated summaries will include written information as well as key sections from relevant videos, accompanied by timestamps. This will allow users to navigate directly to the information they need rather than watching entire videos.

Users who see the initial overview can click “Show more” to read the full AI-generated response and ask additional questions about the same topic.

However, users who do not wish to use AI-generated information can scroll further down the page to access YouTube’s traditional search results.

Through this experiment, YouTube is seeking to make searching for videos and finding information through them easier for users. For now, however, the feature remains in the testing phase and is available to a limited number of users.
