Heatwave increases electricity demand, emergency steps taken to boost power generation

Islamabad (Commerce Desk): Due to the rising intensity of heat, electricity demand in the country has increased significantly, prompting the Power Division to initiate emergency measures to enhance power generation.

According to sources, the Power Division has issued instructions to relevant departments for increasing electricity production and has also sent a letter to the Petroleum Division requesting immediate supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The letter emphasizes the need for the provision of around 400 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas, stating that in the current situation, LNG availability has become essential for electricity generation.

Sources said that with further increase in heat intensity, there are fears of a rise in the power shortfall, while LNG-based plants have the capacity to generate around 6,000 megawatts of electricity.

The letter also highlighted that electricity produced from LNG is relatively cheaper compared to diesel and furnace oil. In case of non-availability of LNG, reliance on diesel may increase, which could result in an additional financial burden on consumers through monthly fuel adjustment charges.

It was further reported that the Power Division has prepared estimates of demand and supply for the coming weeks, while K-Electric has also informed authorities about its requirements.
