Gaza (Monitoring Desk) The fifth municipal elections in Palestine have been announced for April 25, 2026, and preparations are underway. These elections are being considered important for strengthening the democratic process at the local level.
According to the decision of the Palestinian cabinet, new electoral laws have been implemented under which an open-list system has been introduced for municipal councils, while a majority-based individual candidate system will be used for rural councils.
According to reports, the elections were scheduled for a total of 420 local bodies; however, due to the security situation, elections in most areas of Gaza have been postponed, while elections in Deir al-Balah will be held as scheduled.
Thousands of candidates are participating in the electoral process, including a significant number of women. A large number of candidates are also contesting for rural councils.
According to experts, these elections are expected to play an important role in strengthening the local democratic system in Palestine, although the postponement in Gaza has partially affected the process.
