Lahore (Showbiz Desk) The 63rd death anniversary of renowned humorist and writer Shaukat Thanvi is being observed today. He achieved a distinguished position in various genres of Urdu literature, but gained true fame in the field of humor writing.
Muhammad Umar, known as Shaukat Thanvi, was born in 1904 in the district of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. During his journalism career, he remained associated with several newspapers, including Hamdard, Himmat, and the weekly Sarpanch. It was through Sarpanch that he gained full recognition as a humorist, where his humorous articles such as "Sudeshi Rail" and "Sudeshi Dak" became especially popular.
After the creation of Pakistan, he moved to Karachi and remained associated with various newspapers. His popular feature "Qazi Ji" on Radio Pakistan was also widely appreciated.
Shaukat Thanvi also tried his hand at novel writing, drama, short stories, and poetry. His poetry collection "Gahristan" received literary acclaim, while around 60 of his books were published, including Bar-e-Khatir, Behrupiya, Duniya-e-Tabassum, Muskurahatein, Begum, Badshah, and Khapti.
In recognition of his literary services, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. Shaukat Thanvi passed away on May 4, 1963, and was laid to rest in Miani Sahib Graveyard, Lahore.
