According to international news agency Reuters, India has withdrawn its offer to host the 2028 climate conference, a move being described as a significant diplomatic shift at the global level.
According to the Indian magazine India Today, the decision is being seen as a major U-turn, as India had originally offered to host the 2028 event during the 2023 climate conference in Dubai.
Reports suggest that this step is not only the cancellation of an event but is also being viewed as a setback for India’s global image, especially at a time when the country has already faced delays in meeting some of its environmental targets and deadlines.
Environmental experts say the decision is raising questions over India’s claims of leadership in the Global South on climate issues, while debate over its role in global environmental policy has intensified.
