ISLAMABAD (Commerce Desk): Despite tensions in the Gulf region and difficulties facing global shipping routes, Pakistan’s rice exports have improved significantly. In September 2026, Pakistan surpassed Vietnam in rice exports.
According to available data, Pakistan exported 420,000 tonnes of rice to international markets in September, while Vietnam, the world’s third-largest rice exporter, recorded exports of 337,000 tonnes.
The report states that despite tensions between the United States and Iran and shipping difficulties in the Gulf region, demand for Pakistani rice, particularly basmati, remained strong in the international market, boosting the country’s exports.
According to the figures, Pakistan’s total rice export volume increased by 51 percent during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, from July to September 2026, compared with the same period last year.
During this period, foreign exchange earnings from rice exports also recorded a 37 percent increase, reflecting the growing international demand for Pakistani rice.
Experts say this export growth presents an important opportunity for the country to earn valuable foreign exchange. However, they emphasise that improving rice quality, reducing production costs and making the export transportation system more efficient will be essential to maintaining Pakistan’s position in the global market.
