China Warns AI Has Become a National Security Threat

Beijing (Monitoring Desk) — The head of China’s intelligence agency has warned that artificial intelligence is emerging as a new threat to national security and that foreign powers could use the technology to undermine social order.

Chinese Minister of State Security Chen Yixin wrote in an article that hostile forces are misusing AI-based generative technology to spread political rumors and produce harmful information.

According to him, these forces are conducting public opinion and cognitive warfare against China, posing a direct threat to the country’s political, institutional and ideological security.

Chen Yixin said artificial intelligence has become a central arena of global technological competition and is also creating a new front in strategic rivalry among major powers.

He did not discuss potential existential risks posed by artificial intelligence or call for limiting the pace of its development. However, he said technologies such as Anthropic’s Claude Mythos and OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5.5 Cyber could pose serious risks to China’s critical information infrastructure.

According to the Chinese security minister, foreign intelligence agencies are using technologies such as intelligent web crawlers, intelligent data mining and intelligent profiling analysis to collect sensitive information on a large scale, including critical national data, trade secrets and citizens’ private information.

He further said that the war between the United States and Iran had also highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence in the military sector, while advanced technology is playing an important role in gaining an advantage on the battlefield.
