Tehran (Monitoring Desk): Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei has said that the meeting scheduled to be held in Oman today was postponed at Saudi Arabia’s request.
The foreign ministers of Iran and seven Persian Gulf countries were scheduled to gather for the meeting in Oman’s city of Salalah, where matters related to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz were to be discussed.
During his weekly press briefing, Ismail Baghaei said the opportunity had been provided by Iran and Oman, and it was expected that the countries of the region would understand its importance and take advantage of it.
He said that despite all legitimate concerns, this was an appropriate opportunity for the countries of the region to hold mutual negotiations free from the interference of external elements.
The Iranian spokesman said no responsible party would consider the failure to hold the meeting justified on the basis of external pressure or reasons that had no real connection with Iran.
A new date for the meeting has not yet been announced. The postponement was announced by Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, while Bahrain had already announced that it would not participate in the meeting due to Iran’s participation.
