Supreme Judicial Council approves major amendments to judges’ code of conduct

Islamabad (Pakistan News) In Islamabad, the Supreme Judicial Council has approved important amendments to the judges’ code of conduct. According to the issued statement, the name of the Federal Constitutional Court has also been included in the code of conduct, after which this code will apply to the judges of the Supreme Court, High Courts, and the Federal Constitutional Court.

Under the amended rules, the restriction on judges’ participation in social and cultural events has been removed. However, prior permission from the relevant Chief Justice has been made mandatory for participation in political and diplomatic events.

According to the statement, after the amendment of Clause 12, judges will be able to participate in such events with the permission of the relevant Chief Justice, but obtaining permission will be necessary.

It was further stated that a new mechanism regarding pressure on judges, complaints, or interference in judicial matters has also been approved.

According to the new code, in case of a complaint, High Court judges will inform the relevant Chief Justice in writing, while judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Federal Constitutional Court will also inform their respective Chief Justices and senior judges.

The statement added that the judges’ committee will complete action on complaints within 14 days, and if no decision is made within the stipulated time, the matter will be reviewed by the Supreme Court or the Federal Constitutional Court itself.
