Dublin (Monitoring Desk): US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States could remain in Iran, as it did in Venezuela, and keep control of the country’s oil.
While watching a golf match during his visit to Ireland, Donald Trump said he hoped the Iran war would end this year, possibly shortly after the November midterm elections.
The war in the Middle East has severely affected global oil markets, while traders on Monday indicated that oil prices could rise further following an attack on a Saudi oil pipeline.
Trump said the United States would only make a deal that was right and would not agree to an inappropriate compromise. According to him, Iran has been continuously contacting the United States for peace talks, although Tehran has repeatedly denied such claims in the past.
The US president suggested continuing negotiations with Iran, comparing the situation to the agreement reached with Venezuela in August regarding oil production.
According to Trump, the United States would eventually leave Iran; however, if it decided to remain there and keep control of its oil like in Venezuela, the situation could be different. He said the revenue obtained from Venezuela had covered an amount several times greater than the cost of the war.
It may be recalled that the United States and Israel attacked Iran on October 28, after which the war began. The United States continued its attacks, while Iran targeted US bases in Gulf countries and also closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime passage, causing a significant increase in oil prices over several months.
