Islamabad (Pakistan Khabar) — Former ambassador Dr. Maleeha Lodhi has termed the debate over the creation of new provinces or administrative units a drama during a private television program.
Maleeha Lodhi said fundamental reforms are essential to improve Pakistan’s economy; however, constitutional procedures cannot be bypassed through a referendum.
Former foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry said governance and the economy are deeply interconnected. Sixteen years have passed since the 18th Amendment, but resources have still not been transferred to the grassroots level.
He said that after the threat of creating new provinces emerged, many people are now talking about empowering local governments.
Defence analyst Major General (retd) Zahid Mahmood said the fundamental reason for the problems existing in the provinces is poor governance. If a proposal for new provinces has been put forward, it should also be made clear how the move would resolve the problems faced by the people.
