Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Cyber Emergency Response Team has issued a high alert over potential cyberattacks through WhatsApp Web, the desktop application and email, urging government officials and individuals with access to sensitive information to exercise extra caution.
According to the advisory, cyber attackers may impersonate government officials and institutions to steal sensitive information through fake messages, malicious files and emails. Files sent under the guise of official documents could infect Windows computers.
Authorities have warned that if a system is compromised, attackers may gain remote control of the computer, steal passwords and access important data. A hacked WhatsApp Web session could also allow criminals to commit fraud through the compromised account and target other people.
The advisory urges users to remain cautious even when they receive unexpected messages or files from familiar phone numbers. The presence of an unknown device in WhatsApp’s linked devices list may also indicate a potential security threat.
Officials with access to sensitive information have been advised to avoid using WhatsApp Web and the desktop application on Windows computers. Users should immediately log out of suspicious sessions and verify any untrusted link or file before opening it. They have also been warned not to share passwords, one-time passcodes or other verification codes with anyone.
Authorities have further advised users to keep Windows, web browsers and other software updated, enable two-factor authentication and activate WhatsApp’s two-step verification feature.
According to the advisory, if a device is suspected of being compromised, it should immediately be disconnected from the internet and other networks. Relevant messages and system logs should be preserved, and suspicious files or links should not be opened again.
Government institutions and individuals with access to sensitive information have been urged to strictly follow digital security protocols.
