Gas Shortage Poses Risk to Electricity Generation and CNG Sector

Islamabad (Commerce Desk) – Pakistan is facing a potential disruption in electricity production and CNG supply due to a looming gas shortage. Sources indicate that from April, only 80 MMCFD of gas will be available for power plants nationwide, likely reducing electricity generation.

Currently, 150 MMCFD of gas and LNG supplied in March will be discontinued, and CNG sector gas supply may be completely halted. Power plants are expected to receive 25–30 MMCFD of gas, while the fertilizer sector’s allocation may be redirected to electricity production.

As a result, 1,500–1,800 MW of coal-generated electricity is also at risk, potentially affecting 10–15 percent of total electricity output. Sahiwal and Jamshoro plants are experiencing coal shortages, with existing reserves sufficient for only 3–7 days, which may lead to an additional 2–3 hours of load shedding.

Meanwhile, SSGC is also facing gas supply constraints. A spokesperson stated that technical issues in two gas fields have reduced output, but the administration is closely monitoring the situation and working to resolve this unexpected shortage as soon as possible.
