New York (Monitoring Desk) The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, has said that all major questions regarding secret nuclear activities carried out in Syria during the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad and his family have been resolved.
According to a confidential IAEA report, Syria’s new government provided the agency with the necessary information and access during the investigation, for which the agency praised the transparent cooperation of Syrian authorities. The agency said it has received answers to its outstanding safeguards questions regarding Syria’s past nuclear program and remaining nuclear material.
The report confirmed that the undeclared facility in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, which Israel bombed and destroyed in 2007, was a nuclear reactor under construction. At a related site, 73 metric tons of natural uranium metal were also present, of which approximately 55 tons were in the form of fuel rods.
According to the report, Syria was preparing fuel for the reactor, while former Syrian authorities had not disclosed the facilities and nuclear material.
A quarterly report regarding Iran stated that there has still been no progress there. Since the US and Israeli attacks in June 2025, the IAEA has been unable to obtain the necessary access to verify Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium.
