Space is no longer limited to scientific research, exploration of planets, and satellite deployment; major technology companies are now considering it as an important hub for future digital systems.
In this regard, the concept of establishing data centers in space by billionaire entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos has sparked a new global debate. Supporters of the project argue that space-based data centers could better meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data storage, while also reducing energy consumption and heat emissions on Earth.
On the other hand, environmental experts and space scientists have warned that without proper planning, implementing such projects could lead to increased rocket launches, expansion of space debris, carbon emissions, and environmental damage.
Elon Musk’s company SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s company Blue Origin are among the organizations exploring the possibility of establishing data centers in space. According to these companies, space-based data centers could benefit from abundant solar energy, lower operational costs, and improved efficiency.
However, many experts do not fully agree with these claims. A group of scientists representing Earthjustice has urged the US Federal Communications Commission to conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before allowing the establishment of data centers in space.
Experts say that if large numbers of satellites are launched into Earth’s orbit, it could negatively affect the environment, wildlife, and the natural night sky. They warn that space debris and pollution could create serious challenges in the future.
Environmental organization official Tim Whitehouse said that allowing such projects without environmental assessments would be irresponsible, as potential harms must be considered beforehand.
In recent years, interest in establishing data centers in space has increased due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and rising computing needs. Jeff Bezos has predicted that space-based data centers could be established within the next 10 to 20 years, while Elon Musk has also expressed commitment through SpaceX to turn this concept into reality.
