California (Web Desk) — A new study has revealed that students who do not use artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for educational purposes perform better than those who use them.
An education report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) examined the impact of AI technology on children’s learning abilities.
The report compared the science test results of students who avoided AI with the performance of 484 students who used chatbots. According to the findings, students who did not use AI achieved an average score of 509, while those who used chatbots scored an average of 481 points.
According to the study, the 28-point difference between the two groups remained consistent over a period of one and a half years. Similar results were also found regarding other uses of AI, such as researching a new topic and preparing a summary after studying.
Researchers say that simply memorizing information is not enough for learning; mental effort and reflection play an important role in understanding new material.
According to them, AI technology should be used as a temporary aid rather than a permanent crutch so that it can benefit cognitive abilities and improve education. Excessive reliance on AI can lead to problems.
Researchers had previously conducted a similar study in 2022, when AI technology was beginning to gain rapid popularity.
