California (Web Desk): An unmanned passenger aircraft has successfully completed its first test flight across the United States.
Joby Aviation’s single-engine Cessna Caravan aircraft traveled 3,199 miles without assistance from a human pilot. The aircraft took off from California on September 7, using an automated program for the designated route.
Joby Aviation founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt said the cross-country journey offered an initial glimpse into a new era of aviation.
During the test flight, the aircraft made stops at various locations, while its autonomous system continuously monitored obstacles along the route. According to the company, the aircraft successfully completed all stages of the journey.
Joby Aviation said autonomous flights could help connect remote areas with major regions, while also enabling rapid access for relief operations in the event of natural disasters.
