Tehran (Monitoring Desk): Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed that two oil tankers caught fire after striking Iranian naval mines in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz, bringing their movement to a halt.
According to AFP, the IRGC said in a statement published on its official news platform, Sepah News, that both tankers were attempting to pass through a maritime route that Tehran considers illegal.
The Iranian Navy said explosions caused by the naval mines triggered fires aboard both tankers and stopped their movement.
However, Iranian forces did not disclose the time of the incident, the names or ownership of the tankers, or details of any possible casualties among their crews. The claim has not been independently verified.
The IRGC also claimed that Iran had shot down a US drone on Monday night, but no details were provided regarding confirmation or denial by American officials.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments. Any disruption to maritime traffic in the area could affect regional security and global energy markets.
