New York (Web Desk) — The United Nations has warned that artificial intelligence could pose a potential threat to the existence of humanity, making it necessary to establish strong safeguards regarding its use and development.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has said that effective safety measures should be implemented concerning artificial intelligence before the situation gets out of control.
Addressing a meeting in Geneva, Volker Türk said that only a few people in the world possess almost unlimited power over artificial intelligence. According to him, countries benefiting from AI should work to establish agreed and clear limits for the technology.
He said it is essential to ensure comprehensive and non-negotiable safety safeguards regarding advanced artificial intelligence. He will also urge companies developing AI to take steps to reduce the potential risks associated with the technology.
Volker Türk said that, at a minimum, agreed principles and clear limits should be established in cooperation with countries where artificial intelligence is being developed, as well as countries that are part of its supply chain, so that principles can be formulated that must not be violated under any circumstances.
