Gwadar (Web Desk): Fishermen at Guns, near Jiwani in Balochistan's coastal region, safely rescued two rare olive ridley sea turtles that had become trapped in a fishing net. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed to marine life by discarded fishing nets in the sea.
The fishermen freed the turtles from a strong nylon net and released them into the sea. Both animals swam away with the waves towards deeper waters.
According to Muhammad Moazzam Khan, technical adviser to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Pakistan, the incident at Guns was the 37th reported case of olive ridley sea turtles becoming entangled in fishing nets over the past 15 years.
He said 36 similar incidents had previously been reported, involving one or two turtles in different cases, while as many as four sea turtles had been found trapped in fishing nets on some occasions.
Experts warn that abandoned fishing nets pose a serious threat to marine life, as animals trapped in them can suffer injuries or die from suffocation.
